VisionTV expands dramedy development slate

TORONTO – VisionTV has added a fourth title to its short list of original comedy-drama series currently in development.

Mark Prasuhn, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Content Officer for VisionTV’s parent company S-VOX, announced today that the multi-faith and multicultural network has decided to put Flatearth E.R., a project from Angel Entertainment of Saskatoon, SK, into development.

Flatearth E.R. is the story of a strong-willed South African surgeon who moves to a small community in Saskatchewan, where she must learn to co-exist with the aging and cantankerous town doctor.

The project was created by Bob Crowe and Wally Start, and has support from SaskFilm and SCN.

Other dramedy projects now in development for VisionTV are:

  • Local 68, from Toronto-based Hungry Eyes Film & Television Inc. Creators: Jennifer Holness, Min Sook Lee and Sudz Sutherland.

  • Saint Michael, from Toronto-based Shaftesbury Films Inc. and Henry Less Productions. Creators: Steve Cochrane, Phyllis Ellis and Adriana Maggs.

  • Taking on Water, from Vancouver-based Soapbox Productions Inc. Creators: Nick Orchard and Naomi Snieckus.

The projects were chosen from among the 270-plus submissions that VisionTV received in response to a recent call for dramedy series proposals.

Said S-VOX Director of Independent Production Joan Jenkinson: “The development process is now in full swing, and we are eagerly anticipating the results. VisionTV is fortunate to be working with experienced and very talented writer-producers on all of these projects. Each title has been conceived with VisionTV’s core audience of viewers 45-plus in mind, and is rich in potential.”

Once the producers finish the first phase of development – which will include the creation of a pilot script and series bible – one of the four projects will be greenlit for production. VisionTV hopes to broadcast the completed series in the fall of 2010.

VisionTV (www.visiontv.ca), an S-VOX company, is Canada’s multi-faith and multicultural broadcaster, dedicated to entertaining and insightful programming that celebrates diversity and promotes understanding and tolerance among people of different faiths and cultures.
