VisionTV call for dramedy proposals yields bumper crop of submissions

TORONTO – VisionTV has received more than 270 submissions in response to its call for original comedy-drama series proposals, the multi-faith and multicultural network reported today.

“The submissions have come from every corner of the country, from producers with decades of experience and from newcomers to the industry,” said Joan Jenkinson, Director of Independent Production for VisionTV’s parent company S-VOX. “The volume and sheer variety of proposals have exceeded all our expectations.”

On May 15, VisionTV invited independent producers across Canada to send in proposals for a half-hour comedy-drama series. With the deadline now past, the network is reviewing the many submissions.

The results are expected to be announced the week of July 20. VisionTV hopes to see principal photography wrapped by the end of March 2010, with a view to broadcasting the completed series in the fall of that year.

The network is looking for a series of six to 13 episodes that will reflect Canada’s cultural diversity and appeal to VisionTV’s core demographic of female-skewing viewers aged 50-plus.

Said Bill Roberts, President and CEO of S-VOX: “In the midst of a difficult period for the television industry, we feel it is more important than ever to show a commitment to the production of unique and original Canadian drama. We are thankful to the dozens of independent producers who have brought their ideas to us, and we share with them the belief that Canadians are capable of making some of the best television in the world.”

VisionTV’s first venture into original Canadian drama production, the family drama series SOUL, made its broadcast premiere in February 2009. The six-part series is currently being rebroadcast on Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET.

VisionTV (www.visiontv.ca), an S-VOX company, is Canada’s multi-faith and multicultural broadcaster, dedicated to entertaining and insightful programming that celebrates diversity and promotes understanding and tolerance among people of different faiths and cultures.
