Terry Markus is Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of the S-VOX Group of Companies (Vision TV, ONE: The Body Mind and Spirit Channel, JoyTV 10 and 11, and until June 2009 The Christian Channel). Terry joined S-VOX in November 2008 as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary and was promoted to Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in May 2009.
Terry is a graduate of the University of Toronto, and, Queen’s University Law School. She started her career in the broadcast, entertainment and media industries as an associate lawyer at the entertainment boutique law firm of Silverstein, Fisher, Kugelmass & Selznick. After 3 years in private practice, Terry joined Astral Media Inc. where she worked with M: The Movie Network, Super Écran, Family Channel and Viewers Choice Canada, holding the positions of Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary for M: The Movie Network and Special Counsel to Viewers Choice Canada. In her role at Astral Media, Terry was a key member of the launch team for both Family and Viewers Choice. Terry’s next step was to join Alliance Communications Corporation’s broadcasting division (now Canwest Global Communications Corp.), as Vice President, Business and Regulatory Affairs. At Alliance, Terry was a key member of the launch team for Showcase and History Television, and she worked on the successful CRTC licence applications for History Television and for a Video-On-Demand service. After 12 years working in the Canadian broadcasting industry, Terry moved back into the Canadian production industry by joining Catalyst Entertainment Inc. (now CCI Entertainment Limited) and Gullane Entertainment PLC (now HIT Entertainment Limited) as the Vice President Group Head Business Affairs for the Catalyst/Gullane international group of companies. Terry left CCI in September, 2002 to establish herself as an independent consultant providing business and legal affairs services, as well as film and television financing and packaging consulting services, to the entertainment and media industries. Terry’s clients included, among others, the National Screen Institute, the Canadian Film Centre, Canadian broadcasters, independent production companies, producers and talent. In early 2003, Terry co-produced a short film, “DNA”, which was invited to a number of international film festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, the Vancouver International Film Festival and the SXSW Film Festival. Terry has most recently co-executive produced a feature length theatrical film, “SUCK”, which premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.
Terry’s professional associations are with the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, the Artists Health Centre Foundation, the Canadian Bar Association – Ontario (past chair of the Media and Communications Section), the Canadian Film Centre, the Canadian Film and Television Production Association (member, Copyright Committee, and former member of the Ontario Producer’s Panel and Broadcast Relations Committee), Canadian Retransmission Collective (current Board Member), Canadian Women in Communications, Ciné Franco Film Festival (Advisory Board), Law Society of Upper Canada, and Women in Film and Television – Toronto.
